Matatihi - Maia's Journey of Bravery

Our tamariki enjoyed the performance today from our friends at the Court Theatre with this year's show, Matatihi - Maia's Journey of Bravery.
The wonderful thing about this performance was that it incorporated all four disciplines within the Arts - Dance, Drama, Visual Art, and Music.
It's not an easy task to keep over 400 students engaged and focused for 40mins but Kim, Albany and Jane did it beautifully, and we loved it!

All the props are made from recycled materials - Titi was made from an old mop.

It's been a big day for Pouakai

Here's what some of the Harakeke Ukulele Club members thought about the show...

Molly liked the beautiful three part singing.

Cael liked the way the Pouakai spread his wings once he learned how to fly off Maunga Aoraki.

Reece loved the props and how they were made.

Holly liked the detailed costumes.

Oliver liked the Pouakai's funny actions.

Liam liked the Titiri when it was flying in the air saying funny things.

Evie thought the performance was very funny.

Stephanie thought it was clever how they could perform lots of characters with only 3 actors. Calaiss loved how they told the story.

Abbey loved joining in singing the song at the end .

Brianna loved how the eel moved.

Zoe liked how the bird started flying when it was at the top of the mountain.

This performance was based on a lot of different stories from people in our local area who have been brave and who have a story to tell.

Kia ora koutou and welcome back for 2017!

Choir, Kapa Haka, dance groups, ukulele groups and art clubs are up and running. All the children and teachers are enjoying them!

Team Harakeke students are loving learning new ukulele skills.

Kapa Haka Wānanga Performance

We were overwhelmed by the turn-put to our end of year Wānanga Performance. To start off the evening the Year 5 & 6s led all performing Kapa Haka members into the hall with Aoraki Taku Maunga. They then performed the haka Waitaha Riporipo. Next, the Juniors (Year 2 & 3) performed Aoraki Te Mauka, Tirama Tirama Ngā Whetu, and the haka Panana Panana. The Year 4 - 6s performed Whakarongo Mai, Ngā Waka E Whitu, Ka Pioioi E, and the haka Tahu Pōtiki. To finish off the evening, all performers sang Kia Tau together.

Tūmeke to all our performers! Kia ora to Miss Hansen for coming back to play the guitar for us at the last minutes, to our presenter Julana, to our Senior Kaea for leading our performances (Kaya, Kāmaioha, Mishayla & Sophie), and the juniors who led the junior items (Zachariah, Rosaria, Eva, Laura, Zoe & Flynn).

Creativity!

Take a walk around the school at the moment and you are struck with the amount of work going into our Wearable Art in preparation for our "Urban Garb" production on 13 - 15 September. The detail and care that is going into these designs is amazing! The students are learning to work collaboratively and we are all learning new skills as we construct, colour and create. Tickets are now available through the school office or online through the School website.

Kids In Town

What a fantastic day celebrating being back in our awesome city and especially at the Chch Art Gallery - such a wonderful space to perform! The Kapa Haka group performed a rousing selection of waiata ably led by Mishayla and Kamaioha. The Y4-6 choir raised the roof with their singing, Kaylin performed her winning Suess dance, and the Legend dance troupe gave a polished performance. 

Special thanks to the City Council for providing transport and hosting us at Kids In Town. Thank you also to our wonderful whanau for coming along to support us all.

Urban Garb Begins

The time has come for us to get busy making all of our Wearable Art for this year's "Urban Garb" production. The glue guns are at the ready, cardboard for miles and paint galore. Check out these photos of the early stages from various rooms.

Kapa Haka Visit Cherry's ELC

On Tuesday 5th July the Senior (Year 4-6) Kapa Haka visited Cherry's on Maryhill as part of celebrations for Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. The children at Cherry's were very excited to have us and sent us a lovely thank you card afterwards. The Kapa Haka members were delighted when the children responded with a waiata. Tino orotika!
