Love to play the ukulele

The Mighty Minnows and Team Harakeke love moving to music and learning the ukulele. Mrs Peterson has taken each class for a series of lessons learning about beat, rhythm, moving, and singing. She thinks it's a great way to spend an afternoon!

Hoon Hay's Got Talent

It was another fantastic year with Hoon Hay's Got Talent 2018, ably led by Mrs Dent and her crew. So many wonderful acts and the judges had a hard time deciding who to put through to the final. The whole school turned out to support their favourite acts and a past pupil, Min Bin came along to perform his amazing dance routine then encouraged the children to dream big and stay focused to that dream. Min did admit that he was sometimes a little bit of a challenge for some of his teachers, but he has found his passion in dance and he is doing amazing things now in America. Thanks Min for your inspiring words. 

Lots happening in the Arts at Hoon Hay School!

2018 is in full swing and the children at school are enjoying many activities and opportunities in the Arts. From choir, drama, ukulele, and art - our children get stuck in and have a lot of fun with what is going on around the school. Classroom programmes include Rad Rhythm, music and movement, recorder and ukulele. There's lots going on!

Music Festival

What a wonderful night of music we had with the Legends choir performing beautifully at the Christchurch Schools' Music Festival last week. Our students always present very well not only in their gorgeous uniforms, but they conduct themselves very well showing respect to those around them. Great job! You can see them in action again at the Twilight Mega Fair on 24 November.

Mighty Minnows have the Moves

The Mighty Minnows Dance Troupe ended the term beautifully for us at the final full school assembly. Thanks to Miss De Freitas and her Year 6 helpers for working with the group - we hope to see them dancing again before the end of the year.

Our amazing "Kids For Kids" kids!

The Year 3 and 4 choir had a huge day on Wednesday rehearsing and performing at the Horncastle Arena with Jackie Clarke and Nathan King at the Kids For Kids concert in conjunction with World Vision. The children raised their voices to lift everyone's spirit's and to draw attention to some important global issues. We love being part of something that is bigger than just our school community so thank you Kids For Kids for having us on board this year.

New Zealanders have a proud history of raising their voices for important issues on the global stage and this year’s Kids for Kids is all about celebrating this ‘Kiwi As’ spirit! Across 19 shows around the nation, 10,000 young New Zealanders have a chance to take to the stage and use their voice for good.

ART from the HeART - 12 - 13 September 2017

Last week the Hoon Hay School hall was transformed into a magical space full of amazing, eye-catching artwork from every classroom. The 470 students had been working so hard during the  term on individual  and collaborative artworks and were all really proud of their finished pieces. Whanau and neighbouring school all visited during two days to view the art on display.

Trash to Treasure exhibits highlighted the Sustainability theme for the year and many of the classes used recyclable and reusable items to create their art pieces. They had visited the CCC Waste Management centre at Bromley earlier in the year where they were inspired to make some changes with the rubbish that gets thrown out to the landfills.

Lynda Peterson, the school’s Arts Co-ordinator, was impressed with the creativity and variety that the students. “It was such a beautiful display of expression and talent - our school community just loved coming together to view the art with their children, especially the grandparents! Art is one thing that encourages us to press the pause button and slow down just for a bit. We all lead such busy lives and anything that gets us to stop to smell the roses is a good thing! The children were all so proud of the art they had produced.”
